Reading — Matthew 5:13–16, Confession — Lord, you have invited us to be salt and light in this world. We confess that we have not consistently lived out our faith in a way that shines your light. We have not consistently served as a preservative of your grace in our communities. We have not relied on your righteousness to guide us daily. Forgive your Church for the times we have acted self-righteously, for hiding our lights under busy schedules, comfort, or fear. Empower us through your righteousness to be the salt and light of the world. Amen.

Discussion Questions

  • Read Matthew 5:13–16. What does Jesus mean when he invites us to salt and light?
  • Describe a time when someone has been salt and light to you.
  • Read Matthew 5:17–20. The kind of “right action” Jesus calls for is impossible apart from him. In hat ways has our relationship with Jesus helped you move towards right action? What are some of the specific changes he has made in your life?
  • How have you seen churches act self-righteously like the Pharisees? What can we as a congregation do to help be a community of salt and light?
