From Leading to Being Led

August 30, 2020

Series: Contempt

Service: Sunday

Discussion Questions:

  1. Read Matthew 4:1–11. In what ways do you see the same temptations of Jesus played out in your own life as you approach politics?
  2. Read John 18:28–40. How might we be in a similar position to Pilate in our political decisions today? In light of that, how do you hear Jesus’ words?
  3. Read Mark 10:35–45. Jesus says “not so among you” when talking about the leadership of the world. How have you fallen into the ways of the world in the area of political engagement? What is Jesus’ remedy?
  4. For Kids: Jesus invites us to lead others by example, what are some ways you can show your friends an example of Jesus’ love?

Confession: Heavenly Father, we confess that we allow the human voices of this world to distract us from listening to your Holy Spirit. We have closed doors to conversation and viewed other people as our enemy. We have gossiped about political leaders and judged them. We have allowed contempt to creep into our hearts. We have tried to fix the world’s problems before praying about them, we have allowed our desire to belong to strengthen biases about groups of people and separate us. We have not taken the posture of a servant in seeking to lead others.  Forgive us, refocus our lenses to see ourselves and others with your grace and truth. Help us to be safe people who bring your gospel to everyone we meet. Amen.
