From Dark to Light

2 Samuel 22:29; Psalm 27:1; Psalm 19:8

“The Lord turns darkness into light.” At the end of David’s life, just before he passes, the Bible recounts this song of his. David must have sung it each time God delivered him from his enemies, the giants of his life. There are a few lines in the song about light but this one struck me deeply. What dark thing in your life has God turned into light?

For me, it was the journey of Alzheimer’s with my father. It is a terrible disease and there were many painful moments along the way. But in each of those moments God reminded me of his love, and he gave me a supernatural ability to see and love my dad moment by moment. Some of my most cherished memories and tender conversations with my dad happened because of this illness. One powerful conversation happened just after he was diagnosed. It felt like we had to have all the conversations right then, before he declined. I was 17 and he was 67 (yep, I was born to a 50 year old father). He shared his hopes for my future and apologized for the ways he got things wrong. We both cried. God affirmed he can shine grace into any dark circumstance.

The prayer of the psalmist compares Him to the morning sun after a storm, bringing new growth and clarity. Our fears and doubts cannot overshadow Him. His Word illuminates our hearts and minds, guiding our actions and decisions. Our prayer is simply to keep our lamp burning while we wait.

Even in the most confusing seasons, God’s presence is radiant. His instruction brings clarity, joy, and assurance. When fear creeps in, remember: the Lord is your light and salvation.

Reflection: Let God’s Word guide your steps today. How does His light bring clarity or peace in a difficult situation?

Prayer: Lord, thank You for being my light in times of darkness. Help me trust You and follow Your guidance today. Amen.
