“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.” These words remind us that Jesus, the “Word,” existed before time, before the stars, before the mountains or rivers. Through Him, everything was made. The text goes on to tell us that in Him was life, and that life was the Light that illuminates the darkness of the world. Have you ever stopped to reflect on that phrase? There are two words for life in the Greek language of the New Testament. Bios is the most regular word, from which we get the word biology. It is our physical being and life. But the word used here is Zoe. It’s a much richer and fuller kind of life, a radiating life that goes beyond the mere biological functions of physical creatures. It’s the kind of life that carries on after Bios ends. Jesus’ life is the life that goes on and illuminates our way.
Too often, we try to create our own light—to solve problems with our strength, to make sense of confusion with our plans. But the Light that matters most is Jesus’ Life. He doesn’t just brighten our days; He transforms our darkest times, our fears, and our struggles. He gives us a life that doesn’t end.
Advent is a season of waiting; but it is also a season of recognition that the Light has already come, and continues to shine. As we prepare our hearts for Christmas, remember that Jesus is not distant or absent. He is with us, illuminating every shadow in our lives.
Reflection: Where have you been trying to light your own path? How can you invite Jesus’ Light into that area of your life?
Prayer: Gracious God, help me see and follow Your Light in every area of my life. Thank You for guiding me and never leaving me alone in darkness. Amen.
