A Light for the Nations

Isaiah 42:6; 49:6; 51:4

“I will make you a light for the Gentiles, that my salvation may reach to the ends of the earth.” — Isaiah 49:6

What’s the farthest you have been away from the lights of a city? I live in Hudson Wi, just outside the twin cities metro area. After living here for about a year I mentioned in a gathering that I lived in a small town and I was corrected by another Hudsonite “We live in an exurb.” Apparently that’s a thing. The point is, on any given night I can look to the west and see the lights of the Twin Cities reflecting off of the clouds. But the farther out you go, the dimmer the light. One evening I stood on a hillside in Transkei South Africa, several days drive from the nearest city. The only light I could see was from the stars and my solar powered lantern.

From the very beginning, God’s light was never meant to stay in one place. His promise to Abraham was that through his descendants, all nations would be blessed. Isaiah’s prophecy continues that vision — a light that shines beyond Israel, beyond borders, beyond expectations. At the end of the Bible that light is fully realized and has spread to every corner of the world. Not the harsh lights of suburban sprawl, but the life giving light of Jesus.

The coming Messiah would not only restore Israel but would bring salvation “to the ends of the earth.” That’s the heart of Advent — the global reach of God’s love. The Light of Christ is not selective; it’s expansive. It calls to the broken, the forgotten, the outsider.

When Jesus called Himself “the light of the world,” He was fulfilling Isaiah’s vision. But He also passed that mission on to us: “You are the light of the world.” As His people, we are called to carry His light into dark places — our workplaces, communities, families, and the world beyond. I’m getting ahead of myself. We will talk more about this in the next couple weeks.

The prophetic light doesn’t stop with Jesus’ birth; it continues through His people. That means Advent isn’t just about waiting — it’s about participating. We join God in His mission to bring light and healing to the world.

Today, think of one way you can extend light to someone outside your usual circle — a neighbor, a coworker, a perceived enemy, or someone in need. Maybe it’s a word of encouragement, an act of generosity, or a moment of listening. The light grows when it’s shared.

Prayer: God of all peoples, thank You that Your light is for everyone. Help me to carry Your hope beyond my comfort zone. Let all I say and do reflect Your salvation so that others might see the light of Your grace and rejoice. Amen.
