When I was a child, my dad gave me a new mini-maglight flashlight for camping trips. I loved the way I could expand the small beam by twisting the head and the light could pierce a completely dark campground. The world looked different under that little circle of light. Shadows would retreat, and the path ahead was suddenly visible. Even a tiny light brought comfort and a sense of security. This is a small picture of what Jesus says about Himself: “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”
Advent is a season of waiting, remembering the longing of God’s people for centuries before Jesus came. Our second week of devotions reminded us that God’s light shines even in the darkest places, even in exile and suffering. Now, in the birth of Jesus, that light is made tangible. It’s not a promise far away—it is present in the manger, present in our lives today. Following Jesus doesn’t mean that life will be without difficulty, but it does mean that we will never walk in ultimate darkness.
The light of Christ pushes back fear and uncertainty, or at least lets us know that we aren’t alone in them. Just as I trust my flashlight to guide me through an unfamiliar dark campground, we are called to trust Jesus to guide us through the complexities, challenges, and temptations of life. Darkness can be intimidating—loneliness, sin, grief, and anxiety can make us stumble. But His light illuminates not just the path, but our hearts, showing us where to turn, what to leave behind, and how to move forward in trust.
It’s important to remember that this light is not ours to manufacture. In previous devotions, we considered the prophetic light, the anticipation of the Messiah that Isaiah and the other prophets spoke of. That light was a promise. Now that promise has become reality in Jesus. And because it is eternal, it is steadfast—no shadow, no fear, no sin can overcome it.
Reflection: Consider areas in your life where you feel lost or uncertain. How can you allow Jesus’ light to guide your next steps? Perhaps it is a relationship needing reconciliation, a decision you’ve been putting off, or a personal fear that keeps you from moving forward. Discuss that with God and bring it into His light, not to be condemned, but to find direction, peace, and hope.
Prayer: Lord Jesus, thank You for being the Light of the world. Help me follow You today, trusting that in You I will never walk in darkness. Shine Your light into every corner of my life, especially those areas where I have been hesitant to invite Your presence. Amen
