The Transfigured Light

Matthew 17:1–13

Have you ever sat on top of a mountain? I once rode a ski gondola to a mountaintop in the swiss alps just as the first rays of sunlight broke through the morning fog. The world seemed to shift in an instant—the ordinary became extraordinary. As the fog parted I could see the village below and all the trees of the lower parts of the mountain. I was in awe of how beautiful the light was as it gave shape and contour to the valley below. That moment is a shadow of what Peter, James, and John experienced on the Mount of Transfiguration. Jesus’ face shone like the sun, His clothes became dazzling white, and Moses and Elijah appeared. A voice from heaven declared, “This is my Son, whom I love; listen to Him!”

This is the light of revelation—the Light of God made visible. Week 2 showed us God’s light guiding through darkness and waiting; now, in Jesus, the light is unveiled. We know from whom the light comes and what it is here to do. It isn’t just a small beam for guidance—it is brilliant, transformative, and awe-inspiring. When we see the Light, it changes us. It invites us to sit in “awesome wonder” as the hymn reminds us. An invitation into worship, reflection, and ultimately, obedience.

We often live in partial light—glimpses of God’s truth in Scripture, moments of clarity, or answered prayers. These are like light beginning to break through the fog. But the Transfiguration reminds us that God desires full revelation. Jesus’ light shows the truth of who He is and His mission. He came not only to illuminate but to transform our understanding, calling us to see life, relationships, and eternity differently.

Reflection: Think of moments in your own life when God’s presence transformed your understanding of a situation. How did His light change your perspective or behavior? Today, ask God to reveal Himself in ways that reshape your heart, guiding you to live in obedience and faith.

Prayer: Lord, reveal Your hand in my life. Let Your light transform how I see myself, others, and the world. Teach me to listen, trust, and follow You more fully each day. Amen.
