Walking in the Light

John 11:8–10

There’s a simple yet profound truth in Jesus’ words here: “Are there not twelve hours of daylight? Anyone who walks in the daytime will not stumble, for they see by this world’s light.” Now clearly Jesus didn’t live and minister in the upper Midwest where December 21st will only offer us about 8.5 hours of light.  But we still get the point. There is a time when the light is more readily accessible. Advent teaches us to recognize God’s light breaking into our world, and this passage challenges us to act while the light is present.

I’m reminded of driving at night on the road to our family cabin in Spooner, Wisconsin. Even light from a single farmhouse can make all the difference. Without light, the curves, dips, and obstacles are treacherous. Light is not just beautiful—it is protective, enabling movement and safety. Jesus invites us to walk in His light daily. Walking in His light while waiting for the time He illuminates everything is at the heart of this Advent journey.

God’s light pierces darkness gradually, step by step, guiding us through rough and uncertain terrain. Jesus’ light at the end of revelation, however, is a full illumination—not partial, not dimmed by circumstances. We get to live in that light in the in-between, here and now. It empowers us to navigate our daily challenges with confidence that, though we may not know the whole road, we can see just enough ahead to respond in a Jesus-shaped way.

Walking in the light also means recognizing the limited time we have. Just as the daylight hours are finite, the opportunity to respond to Christ’s light is urgent. Advent is a reminder: do not wait until darkness overtakes you. Engage, receive grace, and follow now.

Reflection: Are there areas where you’ve hesitated to follow Christ’s guidance because it feels inconvenient, risky, or uncomfortable? Today, walk in His light—make a step of faith, speak a word of truth, or extend grace where it’s hard. Walking in the light protects, directs, and empowers.

Prayer: Jesus, help me to walk in Your light while it is before me. Show me the steps I should take today, and give me courage to follow faithfully, even when it challenges me. Amen.
