Walking down the aisle in the lighting section of Menards trying to find the right light bulb to replace my kitchen hood light feels overwhelming. There are so many choices: style, LED, halogen, or incandescent? Soft white, white, or daylight warmth? And then there are the lumens. Lumens measure the amount of visible light emitted. How does one measure a lumen anyway?
Even when darkness surrounds us, God’s presence provides the one lumen of light we need. Psalm 139 beautifully reminds us that “even the darkness will not be dark to You; the night will shine like the day, for darkness is as light to You.” In other words, no shadow, no hidden corner of our lives, no circumstance—nothing—can separate us from His light. The Light of Christ is present everywhere, ready to guide, comfort, and illuminate.
Proverbs 20:27 says, “The human spirit is the lamp of the Lord that sheds light on one’s innermost being.” Our spirits, when surrendered to God, become conduits for His light. And Psalm 119:105 reminds us that God’s Word is a lamp for our feet and a light on our path. When we study Scripture, meditate on it, and live it out, we invite God to illuminate our thoughts, decisions, relationships, and challenges.
Walking in God’s light doesn’t mean life is free from challenges or uncertainty. Rather, it means that in every difficulty, His light guides the next step, the lesson, or the opportunity for growth. It transforms ordinary moments into encounters with God and turns struggles into spaces where His grace can shine. We don’t get 1000 lumens to give us a high beam view of the future. We get one lumen who is with us and lights the next step.
Reflection: Think about a time when God’s Word illuminated your path in a way you didn’t expect. Maybe a verse brought comfort during grief, guidance during a decision, or clarity in confusion. Share that story, or use it as inspiration for encouraging others about the power of God’s light.
Prayer: Lord, thank You that even the darkest night cannot hide me from Your presence. Shine Your light into the corners of my life, illuminating my heart, mind, and spirit. Use Your Word to guide my steps and transform my perspective. Help me walk in Your light today, and let that light flow through me to others. Amen.
