“O come, Thou Day-spring, come and cheer, Our spirits by Thine advent here; And drive away the shades of night, And pierce the clouds and bring us light..”
I’m an amateur outdoorsman. I spend many fall mornings up in a tree hoping for the deer of a lifetime to walk by my stand. Each day, long before the sun rises, I make my way through the woods to my stand as quietly as possible. I know the way so well now that I don’t even use a flashlight. As I sit in my tree facing east I begin to see the glow of the sun’s promise through the trees on the horizon. The funny thing is that even though I can see the light of the sun, the air continues to get colder even after the sun comes up, until the rays of the sun have time to warm the air. As I wait, I long for the warmth that will come with the day-spring.
Advent also begins with longing—longing for deliverance, hope, and light. The Israelites lived in exile, burdened by oppression and uncertainty. Their hope rested in God’s promise: that a great Light would come to break through the darkness. Isaiah declared: “The people walking in darkness have seen a great light; on those living in the land of deep darkness, a light has dawned.”
This prophecy points directly to Jesus. He is the fulfillment of God’s promise—a Light shining in the shadows of despair and oppression. When we read Matthew 4, we see the fulfillment: Jesus begins His ministry in Galilee, bringing hope to those living in spiritual darkness. The same Light that the prophets promised still shines today, guiding our steps, comforting our hearts, and bringing clarity to confusion.
Advent reminds us that God’s light is not a distant idea—it is personal, tangible, and present. Even in our own seasons of waiting or sorrow, Jesus’ light is there. The darkness we encounter in daily life—loneliness, distraction, addiction—is never stronger than God’s promise.
Reflection: Think of a time when God’s promise brought clarity or hope during a season of waiting. How did His light guide you or bring peace?
Prayer: Father, thank You for sending Your Light into the world. Shine Your prophetic Light into the darkness in my life. Help me trust Your promises and share Your hope with others. Amen.
