I Am – The Light of the World

March 1, 2026

Series: I Am

Service: Sunday

Summary

This week Jesus declares, “I am the Light of the world.” His light is not simply something to admire, it is something to follow. In a culture of distraction, Jesus’ light restores our attention, realigns our hearts, and teaches us to walk in truth and love.

Icebreaker

  1. Have you ever experienced a time when “more” of something actually made it harder to find your bearings (more information, more opinions, more noise)?
  2. When you think about the word distraction, what comes to mind in your life?

Reflecting on Our Attention

Our world is filled with light—screens, headlines, notifications—yet many people feel spiritually dim. Why do you think that is?
The sermon suggests that we can be distracted both externally and internally (comfort, image, preferences). Which of those feels most relatable to you right now?
How can distraction affect our relationship with God? What signals you that distraction might be affecting your faith?

Scripture

Read Together: John 8:12–15, 1 John 1:5–7, 1 John 2:7–11

  1. As you read, notice repeated words like light, walk, truth, love, and darkness.
  2. In John 8:12, Jesus says, “Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness.” What do you think it means to follow the Light rather than simply believe in it?
  3. In John 8:13–15, the Pharisees are focused on rule and arguments instead of what God is doing right in front of them. Where do you see a similar temptation in our culture and in your own heart?
  4. 1 John 1:5–7 describes walking in the light as honesty before God. How do you practice being honest with God in your own faith? Do you find it easy or difficult to be honest with God?
  5. In 1 John 2:7–11, John describes those without love as stumbling in the dark. How can distraction diminish our capacity to love well?
The sermon suggests: “What captures our attention shapes our affection.” Where do you see that principle at work in your own life?

Live It Out

This week’s step is simple: share a meal with someone. Spend at least one full hour at the table in intentional conversation. Phones off and put away.

Group Follow-Up Questions:

  1. Who might God be inviting you to share that meal with?
  2. What does it look like not just to eat together, but to truly present to the person with you?
  3. How might practicing focused presence be a way of “walking in the light”?

Close in Prayer

Prayer prompt for us as individuals:
Lord Jesus, Light of the World, gather our scattered attention. Reveal where we have been wandering, and gently lead us back into Your truth and love.
Outward prayer prompt for the world around us:
Jesus, shine Your light into a distracted and divided world. Restore our capacity to love, to listen, and to walk closely with You so that others may see Your light through us.
