Series: Faith

Service: Sunday

Book: James

Scripture: James 3:3–12

Discussion Questions

  1. Share a time when someone else said something negative to you that stuck with you.
  2. Read James 3:1–12. Of the three illustrations (bridle, rudder, spark) about the tongue, which one resonates for you and why?
  3. Verse 8 implies we can’t tame our own tongue. Do you think this is true? Why or why not?
  4. In Luke 6:43–45, how do Jesus’ words relate to James’ words? How does the way you speak reflect your inner state

Confession

Lord God, we confess that we are slaves to sin and cannot free ourselves. Whether we want to or not, we have sinned against you and our neighbor by what we have said and left unsaid. We have not trusted your promise nor loved our neighbor with our whole heart. Jesus, we ask for your forgiveness. Holy Spirit, do your work to renew our hearts and clarify our speech so that we may live as your witnesses in our neighborhoods and across the Saint Croix Valley. We pray in the name of Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Amen.
